PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Background:
Zambia possesses fertile land, abundant water resources, and significant potential to diversify its economy through a wide range of agricultural products. Nevertheless, the agricultural sector has experienced minimal growth in recent years.
Half of the workforce is employed in agriculture. As smallholder farmers, they mostly practice rainfed agriculture. They produce 85 percent of Zambia's agricultural products. Nutrient-poor white maize accounts for 80 percent of the food crops grown and occupies almost two-thirds of the agricultural land. Cultivation methods are often not climate-resilient.
Climate change, with its increasing extreme weather events such as droughts and torrential rains, threatens the already precarious livelihoods of the Zambian population.
Objective:
Agricultural and food policy will be developed based on evidence, and the framework conditions for small and medium-sized enterprises in these sectors will be improved. This will lead to better climate adaptation of smallholder farming, contribute to improved nutrition for the population, generate income, and support gender equality.
Approach:
The project will expand the capacities of the Zambian Ministry of Agriculture. It advises the ministry on successful practices and innovations to disseminate them nationally and regionally.
Furthermore, the project supports small and medium-sized enterprises in the agricultural sector in developing their business models.
