π Tender Overview
Project Location : Jammu and Kashmir.
Project Description : Construction of Zojila tunnel on Srinagar-Kargil-Leh highway in Jammu and Kashmir. Tunnel length spanning 14.08 km and costing of Rs 8,000 crore
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corp. (NHIDCL), a public sector company under the road ministry, has been entrusted to build tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) with all-weather access by 2024
The project would be undertaken on engineering procurement and construction (EPC) mode. The work for 14-km long Zojila tunnel will cost Rs8,000 crore and the PSU is giving a special incentive to the project concessionaire of 10% bonus if the project is completed within six years as compared to stipulated time of seven years.
The tunnel, to be built at an altitude of 3,528 metres, will provide year-long connectivity between Srinagar and Leh as the national highway that connects these two places remains shut for close to six months due to snowfall.
On April 2023, The strategic Zojila tunnel project, between the Kashmir valley and the Ladakh region, is witnessing a rapid pace in the execution of work. Over 40 percent of the drilling has been completed, and the project is expected to be completed by December 2026.
This project has a strategic and socio-economic importance as it will provide the much-needed all-weather connectivity between Kashmir valley and Ladakh, which remains cut-off during winter due to heavy snowfall and hence assumes national importance. The project also involves construction of a tunnel spanning a length of 14.08 km and an approach road of 10.8 km with three vertical ventilation shafts, a snow gallery of 700 meters and avalanche protection measures. The construction of the tunnel is scheduled to be completed in seven years and the concession period is 22 years. The funding for the construction of the Zojilla tunnel was recently announced in the Rs 80000 crore Prime Minister's Reconstruction Plan for Jammu and Kashmir.
Zojila pass is situated at an altitude of 11,578-ft on Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway which remains closed during winters (December to April) due to heavy snowfall and avalanches cutting off Leh-Ladakh region from Kashmir.
The company had submitted the bid to the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for construction, operation and maintenance of 2-lane bi-directional Zojila Tunnel with parallel escape tunnel on Srinagar-Leh section in Jammu & Kashmir on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode
Road Transport and Highways Minister had earlier this year said that the government will re-issue tenders for the strategic Zojila pass tunnel by April and work will commence by August.
