PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Promoting the Blue Economy in Marine Protected Areas of the Eastern Caribbean
Context
The marine and coastal ecosystems of the Eastern Caribbean offer unique biological diversity. They are 50 times larger than their land area, provide important resources for the population, and are crucial for the economic development of coastal regions.
However, the Caribbean's ecosystems are severely degraded. Mangrove areas are increasingly being destroyed, and coral cover and seagrass populations are declining. The greatest stressors include climate change, marine pollution, resource overexploitation, and the destruction of coastal and marine habitats.
Despite political initiatives and marine protected areas, many challenges remain unsolved. Coastal communities and the private sector must be better involved in decision-making, and conservation measures must be implemented more effectively.
Objective
Development in coastal communities and around marine protected areas in the Eastern Caribbean is geared towards implementing a Blue Economy: that is, protecting marine and coastal biodiversity and using it in an environmentally friendly way to promote the economy.
Approach
The project collaborates with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). It involves many stakeholders, especially local governments and public authorities, as well as the private sector, to promote the environmentally friendly use of marine and coastal resources while achieving local impacts.
It implements three comp
