Project Description
EUR 77.5 million credit protection to UniCredit Bank S.A. ("UniCredit Romania"), a bank incorporated in Romania, through participation in a synthetic securitisation of a portfolio of performing SME and corporate loans, originated by UniCredit Romania. The structure employs an unfunded guarantee, which transfers the credit risk of the mezzanine tranche of the securitised portfolio to EBRD. The transaction is part of the UniCredit Group A.R.T.S. program related to Significant Risk Transfer transactions.
Project Objectives
The project will enable UniCredit Romania to strengthen its financial resilience and expand its lending capacity to the real economy. UniCredit Romania has committed to providing new financing to Romanian SMEs and corporates redeploying the capital relief achieved through the project. Of this new financing, an amount equal to 120% of the EBRD guarantee will be dedicated to GET-eligible projects, supporting climate action and environmental sustainability.
Transition Impact
ETI score: 63
The anticipated transition impact of the project lies in its support for both Resilient and Green transition objectives. The operation allows UniCredit Romania to optimize its regulatory capital requirements through risk-weighted asset relief and to free up lending capacity, which will be directed toward the real economy, with a focus on the SME and mid-cap segments. Additionally, the project reinforces the Bank's Green Economy Transition (GET) approach in Romania, as UniCredit Romania commits to allocating, a multiple of the EBRD guarantee toward projects that meet GET-eligibility criteria, including investments in energy efficient buildings.
