Project Location ChandigarhProject Background The UT electricity department has floated a fresh tender for conversion of existing overhead lines to the underground system and replacement of infrastructure in Sector 8 the works to be carried out under the Smart City Mission.A senior UT official said that next week they will open the financial bids and accordingly will allot the work to successful bidder.Three years have already passed but the project is yet to start in Chandigarh. The planning work on this project was started in January 2017 and the UT planned to carry out project after Chandigarh was selected as one of the fast-track cities under the Smart City Mission of the Ministry of Urban Development Government of India.Earlier the UT electricity department failed to find any bidders for the project on three occasions.As per the official record there are five 33-KV sub-stations and thirteen 66 KV substations located in different parts of the city. As per laid down norms a sub-station has a life span of 25 years. Around six 66-KV sub-stations have crossed their life span and the number of such sub-stations will continue to grow.As per the plan a total of 12 new 66KV grid substations will be established while all the existing 66KV sub-stations will be upgraded in next 10 years. There is overhead transmission line of 2037 kilometres in the city which will be converted into underground line.The department has set a deadline of 10 years for completion of the work. There is also a plan to install new 1825 distribution transformers.
