PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Context
Brazil has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 37 percent by 2025 compared to 2005 in order to mitigate climate change. A significant portion of these emissions are caused by land-use changes. For example, approximately 90 percent of deforested land in the Amazon region is used for extensive livestock farming and other forms of agricultural production.
The application of environmentally friendly agricultural practices can increase land-use efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Transparent supply chains would enable buyers and consumers to learn about the origin of products. This would enhance and promote more environmentally friendly agricultural production. However, because transparency in many supply chains is still insufficient, producers struggle to access differentiated markets. Furthermore, small-scale producers in the Amazon region struggle to make their production systems more climate-friendly because appropriate government support measures are either inaccessible or lacking entirely.
Objective:
Agricultural supply chains in the Amazon region are more environmentally friendly and transparent.
Approach:
The project is committed to ensuring that environmentally friendly and transparent agricultural supply chains are given greater focus in public policy. Furthermore, the project aims to create incentives and raise awareness of the benefits of widespread implementation of climate-smart agriculture in the Amazon region.
