PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
70 million people live in the Mekong River basin in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. The Mekong River and its tributaries are essential for food, energy, and drinking water. One-third of global rice exports come from this region and contribute to global food security. However, economic development carries the risk of overexploitation of natural resources. Climate change is exacerbating the pressure, while water conflicts threaten regional stability. As an important trading partner of the European Union, common strategies for long-term water management are needed.
The Mekong River Commission (MRC) has regulated regional cooperation since 1995. The MRC plays a crucial role, particularly in addressing transboundary challenges such as droughts and floods.
Objective
The MRC will better manage the impacts of climate change in the lower Mekong River basin and optimize cooperation between member states.
Approach
The project advises the MRC on expanding its institutional capacity and achieving financial independence while fulfilling its core mission. At the same time, it must respond flexibly to environmental changes. The MRC is strategically realigning its activities to improve cross-border services and promote solutions.
