Ensemble Grandissons avec Espoir en Europe (EGEE) - Growing Together with Hope in Europe
Europe is built on a democratic ideal that was first conceived in ancient Greece, the cradle of our civilisation, and then by the philosophers of the Enlightenment, a European movement if ever there was one. These intellectuals believed that only citizens enlightened by reason and authorised to think critically could form the basis of this ideal of democratic government. Schools played a decisive role. In fact, democracy is only possible if schools encourage pupils to reflect on the world around them and to accept different points of view. The exercise of debate, for example, is eminently political in that it accustoms children from a very early age to confronting different ideas.
EGEE intends to create a training tool in line with this approach and to train teachers and future teachers in its practical use in the classroom. It has the advantage of covering a range of disciplines: children's literature, art history, history, geography and civic education, and offers a gradual pathway in 3 sections that will develop in sequence: working with images, working with texts and reappropriating them through games and theatre.
By using this tool, trained and certified teachers will be able to engage their pupils in a civic awareness of the democratic ideals of the Europe that inherited the Enlightenment. Emphasis will be placed on combating all forms of discrimination to which too many children are subjected by nurturing their capacity for empathy. The ultimate aim is for teachers trained in the EGEE tool to encourage their pupils to reflect on the question: how is Europe combating discrimination in order to build a happy future for every child
