PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Context:
According to the Africa Regional Integration Index, the East African Community (EAC) is the most cooperative regional economic organization in Africa. This trade-related integration is more advanced than in other regional economic communities in Africa, as demonstrated by the introduction of common external tariffs.
However, institutional and legal barriers still prevent the implementation of the customs union and the common market. While there are agreements to facilitate regional trade in services and labor mobility, implementation is not yet complete. The private sector and civil society are often poorly informed about the status of integration. They also lack regional networks to play an active role in the integration process.
Objective:
The institutional and legal framework for regional and continental trade in the EAC has improved.
Approach:
The project provides advice in the following areas:
- It promotes regional and continental trade, for example, through regional profits from the fruit and vegetable and pharmaceutical industries, as well as through better access to regional, continental, and international markets.
- It supports the EAC in implementing regional and continental agreements on trade in services.
- It further develops the organizational structure of the EAC Secretariat so that it can better manage integration and implement the EAC development strategy.
