Description
The proposed knowledge and support TA project aims to facilitate implementation of trade and transport facilitation initiatives in South Asia by supporting: (i) the conduct of analytical studies on a broad spectrum of issues affecting cross-border transport and trade along key subregional trade routes, including digital trade facilitation, and initial implementation of selected recommendations; (ii) engagement with trade-related private sector entities; and (iii) organization of platforms for subregional dialogue, knowledge sharing, and capacity building.
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy
Regional integration plays a key role in cushioning global shocks and reducing their negative impacts. As protectionism and fragmentation add to economic challenges, stronger cooperation and investment in both regulatory and physical infrastructure can enhance resilience and mutual gains for regional trading partners. Fostering policy dialogue on sustainable trade and transport facilitation is furthermore essential to help regional economies in ensuring sustainable supply chain. While significant policy actions in customs reform have been initiated, trade facilitation measures and reform are at different stages in South Asia and require further technical support to be fully updated or operational.
