Africa Union (AU) Regional Nutrition Strategy2015โ2025 outlines Africaโs commitment to End Hunger. It responds to the United Nations Secretary Generalโs Zero Hunger Challenge and the AU head of states commitment of Ending Hunger in Africa by 2025. It is anchored in the African Unionโs Malabo Declaration on Accelerated Agricultural Growth and Transformation for Shared Prosperity and Improved Livelihoods adopted in 2014 and reflects the recently initiated AU Agenda 2063, which articulates the longer term vision of the continent. It purposes to transform political commitments into concrete actions at country and regional levels, while responding to the UN Secretary-generalโs Zero Hunger Challenge. It seeks to mobilize political commitment fora sharper programmatic and investment focus on food security and nutrition, facilitating stronger partnerships and inter-sectoral coordination, and strengthening governance and accountability mechanisms needed to achieve tangible impact. In September 2021 the African Union Commission (AUC) in conjunction with the Government of Cรดte dโIvoire, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the West African Health Organization (WAHO), jointly organized consultation on how to reduce micronutrient deficiencies in Africa through food fortification. The meeting underscored to build food fortification capacity in the continent. While there is increasing attention to sourcing SNFs locally across Africa, challenges remain to strengthen local sourcing of SNFs. The Corvidโs unprecedented disruption of global food supply chains lends more importance to the need to build systems for local or regional sourcing of SNFs.To this end, UNIDO will formulate an Africa Programme framework to support local sourcing for Specialized Nutritious Foods and specific country projects to support value chain actors to meet the market requirements and demand. The range of activities embedded herein will include those aimed at strengthening trade development and marketing capacities, supporting reduction of post-harvest losses, modernization and optimization of SNFs processing capabilities, establish private sector partnership to support SNFs production, link SNFs processing SMEs to nutrition programming, support bio-fortification of crops for better and inclusive nutrition, promotion of government policies that support positive nutrition outcomes through SNFs, and development of multi- purpose market surveillance systems for SNFs
