Description: Rwanda is committed to promoting sustainable development and climate resilience. In line with Vision 2050, which aims to position the country as a high-income, knowledge-based economy, the government is strengthening green financing mechanisms to foster investment and support this transformation. Financial resources are being mobilized through the Rwanda Green Fund (formerly known as FONERWA) to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy, ensuring businesses, institutions, and communities have access to sustainable financing opportunities.
A key instrument of the Rwanda Green Fund, the Intego Rwanda NDC Facility, finances initiatives by public institutions that contribute to Rwanda's climate commitments, as defined in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). Launched in 2022 with financial support from the Kreditanstalt fΓΌr Wiederaufbau (the French Community Credit Union), it received new commitments in 2024 from the Government of Luxembourg and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
An initial call for projects led to the preselection of 33 high-potential proposals, of which the 10 most advanced projects will constitute the first cohort, which will begin implementation in early 2025. These projects focus on key areas such as climate resilience in rural districts, the restoration of natural spaces such as urban wetlands, and energy efficiency in buildings and infrastructure.
This project represents a EUR 4,000,000 contribution from the Luxembourg Ministry of Environment, Climate, and Biodiversity to the Intego fund. By investing in climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas emission reduction projects, Intego plays a vital role in achieving Rwanda's ambitious climate goals.
