The project in brief
Background Burkina Faso is experiencing a major humanitarian crisis, marked by increased food and nutritional insecurity and a deterioration of the livelihoods of vulnerable populations. By 2025, more than 2,264,000 people (10% of the population) will be food and nutritionally insecure and therefore in need of food assistance. With the severity and prolongation of the crisis, the need for food assistance and livelihood protection is increasing sharply. The Government is requesting support from partners to address the crisis within the framework of the national coordination mechanism for food and nutrition security interventions. Switzerland, through its humanitarian action, will provide food assistance (saving lives) and protect the livelihoods of populations, particularly those forcibly displaced. This support (a one-time phase) will be provided through a contribution to the Food Security Support Fund (FASA), which is the financial instrument of the national coordination mechanism for food security interventions.
Objectives To contribute to the reduction of food and nutritional insecurity and to the resilience of vulnerable populations, particularly internally displaced persons.
Target groups Food-insecure populations in immediate need of assistance. Approximately 130,000 people (displaced persons and host communities) of whom 80% are women and children. Livestock farming and agropastoral households in areas of fodder deficit.
Medium-term outcomes Outcome 1: Food-insecure populations, particularly displaced persons, gain access to emergency food assistance that meets their vital needs (saving lives). Outcome 2: Livestock and agro-pastoral households affected by security and climate crises protect their livelihoods and strengthen their resilience Outcome 3: The national food security council is better able to anticipate food and agropastoral crises and effectively coordinates assistance to vulnerable people
