PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Resilient Water Infrastructure: Combating Water Scarcity in Jordan. In Jordan, water is a scarce resource, and the water supply faces several critical challenges: rapid population growth, the effects of climate change, and a water loss rate of 54 percent are just a few examples. Outdated infrastructure, high energy consumption, and inefficient wastewater management exacerbate the situation. Furthermore, legal gaps and difficulties in complying with environmental regulations persist. The situation is further aggravated by the insufficient adoption of digital solutions; rural communities and women are also excluded from the necessary negotiation processes. This project addresses key challenges regarding Jordan's water supply. The main steps are:
- Institutionalizing processes to reduce water losses, for example, within the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, the Jordanian Water Authority, and water supply companies. This includes the use of integrated data management systems. In addition, the project is modernizing desalination infrastructure and aims to provide an additional five million cubic meters of water per year.
- To empower the water authority and water suppliers to reduce energy consumption and operating costs.
- To improve wastewater management processes by aligning procedures with environmental standards.
To promote gender inclusion, the project empowers women in rural communities to participate in improving the water supply. For example, they can contribute to the rehabilitation of water networks and improve household water use efficiency.
