Summary
Togo’s recent inclusion in the Science Granting Councils Initiative, through the Directorate of Scientific Research and Technology of the Ministry Delegate for Higher Education and Scientific Research is a significant milestone toward stronger research and innovation in the country. Membership will provide a strategic opportunity to enhance research governance, establish competitive research funding, and increase the contribution of science, technology, and innovation to the achievement of Togo’s national development priorities.
Under Phase III of the Science Granting Councils Initiative, the Direction de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique will implement a 48-month research and capacity-building project. This work aligns with national priorities as well as regional and continental frameworks, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals.
The project will strengthen Togo’s research and innovation system through a competitive funding mechanism anchored within the Direction de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique. It will support interdisciplinary research that addresses key national development challenges in areas such as food security, climate resilience, access to health services, energy transition and digital transformation. Goals include promoting scientific excellence, strengthening institutional capacity and promoting policies based on scientific evidence. The initiative will foster collaboration across science, technology and innovation systems, generate innovative solutions to development challenges, and enhance Togo’s role within the West African innovation landscape.
This project is part of the third phase of Science Granting Councils Initiative in sub-Saharan Africa, an initiative funded by IDRC, the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), and the Wellcome Trust. Since its inception in March 2015, SGCI has strengthened the capacity of Africa’s Science Granting Councils (SGCs) to support research and evidence-based policymaking, contributing to economic and social development.
