PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Tunisia is threatened by extreme water scarcity, exacerbated by climate change, overexploitation of water resources, and ineffective water management. The Tunisian government is focusing on increasing water supply, while mechanisms for regulating water demand are inadequate. Water authorities are also struggling to implement existing strategies for a balanced water supply.
Tunisia is managing water with a future-oriented approach. A balanced water supply is supported by the fair, transparent, cost-efficient, and future-proof use of water – in line with national environmental and climate goals.
The project is working with the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries (MARHP) and with local and national water management officials.
It is supporting the establishment of water-related institutions, such as a national water agency and a regulatory authority, enabling them to better manage and coordinate water resources.
At the same time, it is establishing a digital system that centralizes data on available and used water. This will enable Tunisia to make decisions based on reliable information.
The project also focuses on local water management by working with the regions and users. It develops adapted management plans with them and supports their implementation, with particular attention to women and vulnerable groups. The project also organizes training courses to ensure users manage water responsibly.
