PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Agriculture dominates the Ethiopian economy, with around 80 percent of the population living in rural areas. Ethiopia has diverse natural areas and climatic conditions that enable diverse agricultural production. At the same time, there is a growing demand for food on local and international markets.
However, the predominantly small-scale farming sector cannot meet national food needs and export demand, either in terms of quantity or quality. Food can spoil on the way from harvest to trade, while nutrient losses or contamination reduce product quality. Agriculture suffers from a shortage of and poorly quality agricultural raw materials such as seeds, as well as from unfavorable political structures that provide insufficient support to small-scale farms and processing companies.
Objective: Agriculture is more efficient in selected regions of Ethiopia, from production through processing to marketing.
The project is active in the following areas:
β’ It advises the government and administration at national and regional levels on the planning and implementation of coordinated agricultural policies. Dialogue forums are intended to involve representatives of the private sector in policy-making.
β’ It supports innovations that prevent post-harvest losses in fruits, vegetables, and oilseeds.
β’ It improves supply chains for private enterprises through development partnerships and builds cooperation between smallholder farms and processing and marketing companies.
β’ It advises private agricultural organizations on how to better represent their interests vis-Γ -vis the gove
