Summary
When local food systems are well structured and integrated, they can contribute to the resilience of family farming, improve producers' incomes and ensure a healthy and balanced diet for local communities, including school canteens. However, challenges persist to ensure an efficient and sustainable local supply of school canteens in Senegal such as: the absence, lack or incompleteness of data to better characterize local agroecological food systems, the optimal and regular supply of quality local products to school canteens, which is exacerbated by a legal framework not favoring the integration of local products.
To address these challenges, the project aims to further strengthen local food systems that are resilient to climate change by optimizing school canteen supply systems based on local agricultural production, ensuring the promotion of agroecological practices, social inclusion and gender equality. With a systemic, interdisciplinary, multi-stakeholder, inclusive and participatory approach combined with qualitative, quantitative and experimental research methods, the project will: 1) make a diagnosis of local food systems and school canteen supply systems; 2) analyze the consideration of gender and social inclusion in these sectors; 3) identify and test innovative solutions; and 4) develop a plan for sharing knowledge generated, advocating and scaling up good practices in two highly contrasted departments of Senegal: Rufisque, a peri-urban zone with intensive agricultural systems, and Bignona, a remote rural area with traditional production systems.
Led by the Initiative Prospective Agricole et Rurale (IPAR), the project will be implemented for a duration of 48 months in collaboration with GRDR Migration-Citoyenneté-Développement and CICODEV Africa. It is part of the Catalyzing Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Procurement for school Food (CRISP), a cohort of projects that aim to catalyze the adoption and scaling-up of regenerative, equitable and inclusive practices in school meal supply systems in Africa, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the agroecological transition of local and national food systems.
