The National Science and Technology Council of Zambia aims to strengthen the countryβs science, technology and innovation systems as a driver of inclusive and sustainable development. Challenges include low investment in research and development, weak pathways from research to uptake and limited private-sector participation.
This project will support the Council in running two complementary research and innovation calls that respond to national development priorities. The first call will validate and scale high-potential research and innovation projects supported under Science Granting Councils Initiative Phase Two. The closed call will build on a portfolio of investments that have already demonstrated scientific merit, relevance and early results, but which require additional support to translate outputs into policy changes and tangible socio-economic results. The second call funds new, multidisciplinary research on indigenous knowledge systems in health, food and nutrition, sustainable agriculture and space science and earth observation.
This project promotes applied, demand-driven, inclusive research, with gender equity and inclusion, open science and knowledge translation integrated into implementation. Expected results include funded research projects, peer-reviewed publications, innovations, prototypes advanced toward uptake and stronger collaboration between community research and industry. In addition, project leaders expect to see the increased participation of women and early-career researchers into science systems.
This project is part of the third phase of the Science Granting Councils Initiative in sub-Saharan Africa (SGCI-3), an initiative funded by IDRC, the United Kingdomβs Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and the Wellcome Trust. Since its inception in March 2015, SGCI has strengthened the capacities of Africaβs Science Granting Councils to support research and evidence-based policymaking that contributes to economic and social development.
