Summary
Gender-based violence in higher-education institutions is well-recognized as one of the factors inhibiting the career trajectories of women, girls and underrepresented groups in a variety of disciplines, particularly science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In the Global South, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, persons with disabilities and early-career researchers are often exposed to abuse and discrimination. While evidence about the scale of the problem originally came from high-income countries, there is a growing body of literature on gender-based violence in higher-education institutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Major gaps remain in our understanding of how to design, implement and sustain inclusive policies and practices in a higher-education context.
This project plans to address these gaps by improving the evidence base on gender-based violence in higher-education institutions in LMICs. It will invest in locally led, LMIC-based research, strengthening the capacity of researchers and institutions and supporting the uptake of evidence into policy and practice. The project will launch a call for proposals to invite applications from researchers and institutions based in LMICs. Up to six research studies will be undertaken over two years. The initiative will offer grant partners technical assistance, based on a capacity-assessment survey. The project plans to establish a community of practice to connect researchers, practitioners and policymakers working on gender-based violence in higher-education institutions and will co-create research outputs that support the uptake of research findings.
This project will produce high-quality research on gender-based violence in higher-education institutions and increase their capacity to conduct research on the subject. It plans to ensure the uptake of research by engaging decision-makers early in the process, building networks and calibrating outputs to engender change.
