πŸ“‹ Tender Overview

Scope :

The project is fully aligned with the strategy, articulated in adbs country partnership strategy (cps) for nepal, 20202024, to focus on energy sector reform and financial sustainability. the project directly addresses three key operational priorities of adbs strategy 2030 (i) tackling climate change, building climate and disaster resilience, and enhancing environmental sustainability through increasing use of clean energy in nepal and neighboring countries and contributing to climate and disaster resilience and enhancement of environmental sustainability; (ii) strengthening governance and institutional capacity through promoting a step-change in institutional capacity and governance at nea; and (iii) fostering regional cooperation and integration through regional energy trade and connectivity with india and bangladesh. the project will also address the following sustainable development goals (sdgs): zero poverty (sdg 1); affordable and clean energy (sdg 7); and climate action (sdg 13).
Nepals mountainous geography and the seasonal incursion of the indian southwest monsoon provide the country with an abundant hydropower resource with which the country should be able to meet electricity demand for decades to come. however, only about 1,500 megawatts (mw) of indigenous and clean hydropower capacity have been realized to date out of economic hydropower potential that is estimated to be more than 40,000 mw. almost all of the hydropower capacity that has been developed to date is run-of-river type as it is cheaper and carries lower development risk than the larger storage-type schemes, but its output depends on river flow, meaning that electricity generation during the dry winter months (november-may) is severely constrained (around 65% of the output during the rest of the year). electricity imports from india are used to bridge the gap between demand and supply during this period, with more than 40% of nepals electricity demand being provided by india at times. this imposes a significant financial burden on nepal, severely impinges upon the countrys energy security and reflects suboptimal use of nepals natural resources. this situation will worsen as electricity demand in nepal is expected to grow sharply between 2021 and 2030.
