๐ Tender Overview
Scope :
Construction of Sambangalou dam in Senegal. The new 91m-high dam will be constructed in the south-east of Senegal, close to the Guinean border. It will have a generating capacity of 128MW and will improve farmland irrigation and supplying drinking water for the surrounding districts. The Gambia River Basin Development Organisation involves four countries: The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal.
The organisation aims to explore the common resources of the Gambia, Kayanga-Geba and Koliba-Corubal river basins. The contract follows an 18-month initial phase of conducting studies and preparatory work on the project.
Preparatory construction work for the project began in September 2022, paving the way for about four more years of construction work, which will be in three phases:
Phase 1 โ Construction of the projectโs access roads, the Kรฉdougou Bridge, and the organizationโs housing estate.
Phase 2 โ Construction of the dam and hydroelectric power station.
Phase 3 โ Installation of hydromechanical equipment in the hydroelectric power station.
The project will recruit and train up to 1,200 at the peak of its implementation. On completion, the dam will irrigate 90,000 hectares of farmlands and contribute to the drinking water supply of surrounding communities.
Work on the project is scheduled to commence in the first half of next year and is scheduled to last 48 months. The project will create 1,000 jobs during the peak construction phase. The power generated by the Sambangalou dam will be injected into the grid of the four countries participating in the organisation, where VINCI Energies will install several hundred kilometres of high voltage lines. Upon completion of the project, the drinking water treatment facility, which is set up for the project, will remain in operation and the worksite buildings will be donated to schools.
This power station is a component of a multi-purpose project aimed at (a) providing electricity to the four countries of the Organisation for the Development of the Gambia River (OMVG), namely; Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and the Gambia, (b) supplying irrigation water to the farming communities in the region and (c) providing a source of drinking water to the residents of the area. The OMVG, which owns and is developing the tiered project and power station, selected a consortium of French and Austrian companies to execute the developments. The project will be developed in phases: Phase I involves the building of access roads, construction of staff houses for the construction crews and the erection of Kรฉdougou Bridge. Phase 2 involves the construction of the 91 metres (299 ft) tall dam and the power station, creating a reservoir with a surface area of 181 square kilometres (70 sq mi), extending from Senegal to Guinea. Phase III involves the installation of the electro-mechanical equipment into the power station, capable of generating 128 megawatts of electricity.
