PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Initial situation
The mining industry is crucial for the economy of many resource-rich countries in the Global South, as well as for implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Given the growing global demand for raw materials for the energy and transport transition, as well as for digital technologies, compliance with the highest possible social, governance and environmental standards must be ensured. In order for the mining industry to contribute to sustainable development, the profits must also benefit the local population - through better job opportunities, fair tax payments and appropriate wages. Raw material extraction must be socially just and climate-friendly in the sense of a just transition.
Objective
German development cooperation aims to actively contribute to shaping the framework conditions for responsible raw material supply chains and to promote the corresponding international dialogue and networking within the framework of multi-stakeholder initiatives.
Approach
When advising the BMZ, the sector project operates in four priority areas: raw material governance, social responsibility in supply chains, promoting local value creation and geopolitical analysis. The topics of gender equality as well as environmental and climate protection are addressed cross-sectionally
