PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Context
Jordan is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world. Population and economic growth, as well as a large number of refugees, are increasing pressure on water resources. Communities that have hosted large numbers of refugees also experience high levels of unemployment.
At the same time, riverbanks are eroding, and the dams King Talal, Mujib, Wala, Zeglab, Kofranja, Wadi Arab, Karak, Zarqa Ma'een, and Alwehedi are becoming silted up. Sand and other sediments are accumulating in the reservoirs, reducing their water storage capacity. Siltation poses a long-term threat to agricultural water supplies.
Objective
Employment-intensive measures maintain the reservoirs' storage capacity and reduce erosion in the dam catchment areas. The short-term employment opportunities improve living conditions in the host communities.
Approach
The project is part of the special initiative "Reducing the Causes of Flight, Stabilizing Host Regions, Supporting Refugees" of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It creates temporary employment opportunities ("Cash for Work") for needy Jordanian families and Syrian refugees. It operates in three fields of activity:
1. The project implements protective measures against soil erosion. These include reforestation and the construction of retention dams, as well as terraces, gabion walls, riprap, and dry stone walls in the dam catchment area.
2. The employees preserve cultural-historical sites and rehabilitate relevant ancient water infrastructure.
3. The project creates a project support u
