PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Background:
The economic and social situation in Zambia is strained. State resources are scarce, disadvantaged population groups have limited access to public services, and corruption is widespread.
Therefore, it is necessary to demand accountability from those responsible and to promote a constructive dialogue between civil society and the state. The interests of Zambia's poor, as well as those of women, children, and young people, are not sufficiently considered in political decisions and reforms.
Furthermore, access to justice is limited. Particularly disadvantaged people have little knowledge of their rights and cannot afford legal counsel. The justice system is overburdened, and reforms to the legal framework are long overdue. Backlogs in the courts and an outdated penal code with disproportionately harsh sentences also lead to overcrowded prisons, violating the human rights of inmates.
Goal:
Laws in Zambia are increasingly being developed in a participatory and transparent manner, citizens are demanding their rights from the state, and access to justice is being improved, especially for disadvantaged population groups.
Approach:
With financial participation from the European Union (EU), this project promotes human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in Zambia. To this end, it improves access to accountable institutions, the judiciary, and transparent government decision-making for all segments of the population.
