PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Background:
Security in Ecuador has deteriorated in recent years. In 2023, Ecuador was among the countries in the Americas with the highest murder rates per capita.
As a result, the Ecuadorian government has initiated measures. It faces the challenge of promoting social cohesion, particularly in disadvantaged urban neighborhoods, and coordinating strategies locally, in collaboration with municipal administrations and civil society.
Objective:
State institutions and civil society work together to contribute to stronger community cohesion.
Approach:
The project works with stakeholders from the state and civil society to improve social cohesion in communities. It aims to promote cooperation between local and national authorities.
The project also advises the Ecuadorian Ministry of the Interior on building partnerships with stakeholders to develop a shared understanding and strategies for social cohesion. It supports the Ministry in networking with state institutions such as the Ministry of Education and the Ombudsman's Office, as well as with civil society, the private sector, and academia.
The project trains and advises vulnerable and disadvantaged groupsβespecially women, young people, Indigenous, Afro-Ecuadorian, and queer peopleβas well as government institutions on dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution, civic participation, and building trust. In selected neighborhoods, the project supports local residents in improving neighborly relations and implementing community initiatives.
By increasing opportunities for participation, the project also contributes to strengthening citizens' trust in government institutions.
