PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Regionally Protecting Biodiversity in the Caribbean
Initial situation:
The Caribbean island states are characterized by exceptionally high biological diversity and are home to important marine and terrestrial ecosystems. These form the basis for important economic sectors in the region, such as tourism and agriculture, but are threatened by climate change, pollution, overexploitation, and environmentally harmful economic practices. Less than ten percent of the original plant life remains in a pristine state.
The member states of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have some laws and strategies for ecosystem conservation, but are unable to implement them effectively on their own. The countries cooperate too little regionally and are barely able to strategically protect biodiversity.
Objective:
The CARICOM member states are implementing regional strategies for ecosystem conservation.
Approach:
The project works closely with the CARICOM Secretariat. It supports the Secretariat in coordinating its nature conservation tasks, developing strategic competencies, and establishing a working group with CARICOM and government officials as well as civil society. An action plan is intended to coordinate regional strategies.
In close cooperation with the National Ecosystem Assessment (NEA) initiative, the project trains governmental and non-governmental environmental institutions to use the results of the NEA for planning purposes and to integrate nature conservation into policies, strategies, and laws.
The project also advises on the introduction of a simplified, digital, and regional permitting system to equitably distribute natural resources and their benefi
