PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Initial situation
In Côte d'Ivoire, around one million smallholder farmers cultivate cocoa, usually on just a few hectares of land. Due to low productivity, fluctuating prices, and external shocks such as disease or weather and climate phenomena, incomes are often well below a living income. In addition, producers are often unorganized, and existing farmers' associations lack professional organization. This makes it extremely difficult for them to obtain financing and provide services to their members. At the same time, cocoa cultivation has been the main driver of deforestation in recent decades.
Objective
The cocoa supply chain in selected regions of Côte d'Ivoire is adapted to economic, regulatory, ecological, and social challenges by involving all actors in the supply chain.
Approach
The project focuses on the following measures:
- Improving cocoa farmers' production through proven training. The focus is on adapting to climate change and protecting natural production bases such as fertile soils.
- Train and advise cocoa farmer organizations to secure their long-term market access and enable them to provide their members with high-quality production consolidation services.
- Implement, evaluate, and further develop stable and socially conscious procurement practices with member companies of the Sustainable Cocoa Initiative.
- Support joint learning and innovation through dialogue among members of the Sustainable Cocoa Initiative and the project's target groups.
