The relief of the Kabezi commune is made of steep mountains with little vegetation cover. This promotes soil erosion causing the creation of channels gradually transforming into ravines and more than 10 ravines are recorded with average dimensions of 8m deep, 5m wide and 5Km long which seriously threaten crops, the life of the population, residential houses and other social infrastructures especially the Kabezi hospital as well as the silting up of the waters of Lake Tanganyika hence the increasing decline in fish production generating malnutrition in the area. To help meet these challenges, ODEB in collaboration with local partners has taken the initiative to set up a project to stabilize the ravines and hills overlooking Lake Tanganyika. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the stabilization of the ravines "Nkubare, Gatemba, Miroba, Kigozi and Nyabigega" and the hills overlooking the lake.Tanganyika through the planting of fixing grasses and adapted trees with As Result 1: The hills overlooking Lake Tanganyika are protected against erosion through the planting of fixing grasses on the most threatened sites.
Results 2: The ravines of Nkubare, Gatemba, Miroba, Kigozi and Nyabigega are stabilized through the planting of bamboo, the installation of fascines and cesspools at the household level.
The target concerns the population of these hills where the ravines are located and members of associations made up of young people, women and a community of 100 Batwa and disabled households will collaborate in the implementation of the project.
