The project in brief
Background The ‘Solidarit’Eau Suisse’ (SES) initiative was launched by SDC in 2004 with the innovative idea to mobilize Swiss municipalities and cities to contribute 1 CHF Cent per cubic meter of fresh and waste water as a sign of solidarity with all those people and communities in the Global South deprived from access to drinking water and sanitation & hygiene facilities. Designed as a mandate and assigned first directly and later through a tender process, the same private Swiss company played the role of the Secretariat and ran the platform until end of 2018. In order to ensure the sustainability of SES, SDC initiated with its constituency a transformative process in order to stimulate ownership and a substantial buy-in from key plaxers to move towards a contribution logic.
