PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Context:
In Plateau State in central Nigeria, more than 15,000 people have died in violent conflicts between semi-nomadic herders and farmers since 2010. These conflicts have intensified, destroying infrastructure, disrupting agriculture, and displacing thousands. In May 2023, outbreaks of violence in Mangu claimed more than 300 lives and led to the displacement of over 80,000 people.
Kaduna and Taraba states face similar problems β persistent conflicts are leading to the displacement of people, agricultural land lying fallow, and the disruption of services. The recurring violence has undermined the livelihoods and resilience of communities, mistrust is hindering trust-building, and traditional conflict resolution mechanisms are becoming increasingly ineffective.
Goal:
The peaceful coexistence of farmers and herders is improved, and the livelihoods of women and vulnerable people are secured.
Approach:
The project focuses on conflict transformation, economic empowerment, and environmental management to promote peace and stability in Plateau, Kaduna, and Taraba states. It pursues a participatory approach that ensures locally driven and context-specific outcomes.
It focuses on three key actions:
- Supporting the Plateau Peace Building Agency (PPBA) in coordinating peacebuilding activities in Plateau State.
- Promoting coexistence and economic opportunities for herders, farmers, Christians, Muslims, youth, the
