PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Initial situation
In 2022, intra-African trade accounted for 17 percent of total African trade volume. By comparison, the share is 51 percent in North America, 49 percent in Asia, 22 percent in Latin America, and even 69 percent in Western Europe. Although regional economic communities are striving for integration, the African market remains fragmented.
The trade ministers of the African Union (AU) have agreed to establish the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). With this step, they aim to create greater integration in the region. So far, 54 of the 55 member states have signed the AfCFTA agreement, and by August 2023, 47 states had ratified it. Germany has supported the process since negotiations began in 2015. In 2023, the AU declared the acceleration of AfCFTA implementation as its theme of the year. This is intended to highlight the importance of the free trade area.
