PROJECT INFORMATION
The Old Diamantina Railway Station occupies an eclectic architectural building with 550 m2 of built area, located on Largo Dom JoΓ£o, in the municipality of Diamantina, Minas Gerais. It was built and opened in 1913 under the management of the VitΓ³ria-Minas Railway Company. In 1994, the RFFSA, then administrator of the branch line to which the station belonged, ceased operations. It later became part of the IPHAN Railway Cultural Heritage, given the company's closure in 2007 and its subsequent developments. Currently, the station serves as the Fire Department headquarters.
Given its historical and cultural importance for the city of Diamantina, the station was selected by the Interministerial Committee established by Decree No. 10,349 of May 13, 2020. The decree qualified, in the Investment Partnership Program (PPI), the policy of attracting private investment to the tourism sector, for the purpose of preparing studies and partnerships aimed at implementing new ventures and the tourist use of the country's cultural and natural assets.
The Policy of Attracting Private Investment to the Tourism Sector
The Ministry of Tourism (MTur), aiming to preserve and enhance cultural heritage through partnerships and concessions with the private sector, established Revive Brasil within the MTur and proposed improving the PPI's investment attraction policy. A Brazil-Portugal cooperation protocol, signed in early 2020, and a Portuguese program called Revive were used by the MTur as a reference.
In the context of the investment attraction policy, through CPPI Resolution No. 163, of December 2, 2020 , the PPI Council approved the qualification of three cultural assets at its 14th meeting: the former Railway Station; the Aldeia dos Sentenciados, located in Fernando de Noronha, in the state of Pernambuco; and the Carvalho Motta Palace, located in Fortaleza, in the state of CearΓ‘. Decree No. 10,677, of April 16, 2021 , ratified the qualification of the properties in the PPI.
Four other cultural assets had already been qualified at the 13th CPPI meeting, namely:
Fort Our Lady of Remedies, located in Fernando de Noronha, in the state of Pernambuco;
Fortaleza de Santa Cruz (Forte Orange), located in the state of Pernambuco;
Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, located in the state of ParaΓba;
Pau D'Alho Farm, located in the state of SΓ£o Paulo.
Of the seven properties that make up Brazil's historical and tourism heritage and qualify under the PPI, five were selected for specialized studies to structure plans for delegation to the private sector through non-reimbursable resources from the BNDES Project Structuring Fund (BNDES FEP).
