Scope : To Set up NIV-grade facility for disease research in Pune, Maharashtra
Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital (DMH) has tied up with US-based non-profit Direct Relief to develop a research centre for the diagnosis, genomic sequencing and treatment of highly infectious diseases.
According to DMH representatives, Direct Relief has committed $5 million to help develop the centre, which will be set up in phases over the next six years. It aims to investigate and treat dangerous diseases like Ebola, Cremean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD, or monkey fever), Nipah, Zika and other emerging illnesses of global importance.
In India, only specialised research hubs like the NIV and Delhi-based National Centre for Disease Control are currently equipped to deal with such diseases as their study needs a high-end lab and specialised personnel.
It would be a first-of-its-kind infectious diseases and tropical medicine centre at a private hospital in India, which will be able to to diagnose and treat all varieties of infectious diseases under one roof.
The centre will also enable DMH to become a regional centre in preventing and managing Covid-19 or any other pandemic in the future.
