Project General Description
The present project aims to assist the Government in developing a transport masterplan that will guide the future plans for mobility and transport planning in the northern region of Mozambique. It will strengthen regional integration with Tanzania through the construction of Phase I (70 km) of Mueda-Negomano road project, which is currently a missing link on the spur into Mtwara corridor, through the Unity Bridge (built by the two countries and commissioned in 2010) over the Rovuma River. The project will include a major component on capacity building for the road sector. Also, and within the overall objectives of delivering sustainable and inclusive green growth, the project includes a uniquely designed program for increasing social inclusion of the local communities and preserving the natural assets of the region. At the current stage the proejct consists of the construction of 150km road link ffrom Muda to Nogomano, together with the construction of a OSBP between Tanzania and Mozambique.
Project Objectives
The project objective is to upgrade the link between the town of Mueda and the town of Nogomano (150km) in Mozambique from gravel to paved road standards, and provide a One Stop Border post between Tanzania and Mozambique. This will contribute together with other complimentary measures under the project the improvement of trade flow and people movements across the two countries, hence contributing to unblocking the potentail of the far remote and social excluded regions of Mozambique as well as Tanzania. Strategically this will help improve the region's overall competitivness and aslo contbute to food security.
Beneficiaries
The direct beneficiaries of the project are the Mozambique economy at large and a population living within the project zone of influence in the Niassa and Cabo Delgado Provinces. The other beneficiaries of the project include traders and road users, who transport goods between Tanzania and Mozambique. Also, the roads sector in Mozambique will also benefit from various capacity development activities.
