πŸ“‹ Tender Overview

Scope :
The Morocco-Spain tunnel project will connect Tangier and Tarifa and span 42 kilometers between the terminal stations. With a length of 42 km between terminal stations, including a 27.8 km underwater portion, this fixed line will connect the shores of both countries through the Strait of Gibraltar. Financial and strategic feasibility studies are reportedly being conducted for a Β£6bn high-speed railway tunnel to run across the Strait of Gibraltar connecting Spain and Morocco, with the aim of having it operating by 2030.

The construction of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline and the normalization of relations between Spain and Morocco renewed interest in the construction of this intercontinental tunnel, the Spanish research company underlined. project suggest that the tunnel could see its first green shoots by 2030, coinciding with the FIFA World Cup jointly hosted by Spain and Morocco. Back in 2007, the Spanish government led by fellow Socialist JosΓ© Luis RodrΓguez Zapatero had predicted that the project would become a reality by 2026.

SECEGSA recently submitted to the representative of the Spanish Government all of the studies conducted over the previous 35 years regarding the Morocco-Spain tunnel project.

This is a proposed underwater railway tunnel project that is expected to deliver a fixed link between Morocco and Spain, or rather Africa and Europe. The will of the two countries to construct a tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar materialized on October 24, 1980, when an agreement was signed creating a mixed Hispano-Moroccan committee that constitutes the project’s management body on one hand, and two state research companies responsible for carrying out the work plans approved by the joint committee on the other hand.

The tunnel will be built across the Strait of Gibraltar, a narrow strait also known as the Straits of Gibraltar, that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates the Iberian Peninsula in Europe from Morocco in Africa. The Strait of Gibraltar (Morocco-Spain) underwater railway tunnel project consists of a 38km-long tunnel from Tarifa to Tangier. Of the 38km, the tunnel would be underwater for 27 kilometers at a maximum depth of 475m and a slope of 3 percent.
