Scope construction of the 150km high-speed line between Montpellier and Perpignan. The high-speed line between Montpellier and Perpignan has been announced for 30 years. This HSL is finally on the way. This is the 150 kilometres that are missing to link the French and Spanish TGV networks. Currently the high-speed line ends at Montpellier station. At Perpignan another international high-speed line goes to Figueras Girona and Barcelona in Spain. Currently the best TGV takes 6 hours 34 minutes to connect Paris and Barcelona but with a journey of about 160 kilometres on the conventional line between Montpellier and Perpignan. The new line would be what is known as a mixed line meaning freight trains will also make use of the route which is unusual in the French high-speed culture. This will require the flattest possible profile and a lot of engineering works. The government has just decided to earmark one billion euros for a first step between Montpellier and Bziers ca 53 kilometres. The 98 kilometres of the second phase between Bziers and Perpignan would not be completed until much later by 2040.Previous Event 03 Feb 2016 FRENCH transport minister has approved the preliminary route and station locations for the 150km Montpellier Perpignan high-speed line. The approval covers a 100-120m wide corridor defined by infrastructure manager SNCF Network as the optimal route for the line which is forecast to cost 5.52bn at 2014 prices. The final alignment will be decided at a later stage. However no timetable has been given for the implementation of the project.
