Regenerative agriculture is gaining momentum worldwide, particularly in Latin America, as a promising pathway toward enhancing soil health, sequestering carbon, conserving biodiversity, empowering local farmers, optimizing resource use and producing nutritious food. This growing movement reflects a shift toward more sustainable, resilient and equitable agricultural practices. In turn, a growing number of agribusinesses are transitioning from conventional, intensive food systems toward regenerative approaches that better support communities, climate mitigation, ecosystem services and nutrition security.
This project will focus on understanding and shaping the conditions necessary to scale regenerative food systems through supportive public policies, financial innovation and a comprehensive approach toward gender equality. The specific objectives are to: identify key barriers to scaling regenerative approaches, including policy incentives that currently favour conventional practices, and identify and activate leverage points;
evaluate and test financing strategies by supporting real-world business cases and demonstrating to policymakers the feasibility and value of regenerative investments; and strengthen a regional ecosystem of actors β including entrepreneurs, producers, Indigenous organizations, consumer groups, public officials and investors β, positioning the Regenerative Food Business Consortium as a hub for research, training, advocacy and dissemination.
To drive scalability, the project will implement a knowledge-mobilization strategy grounded in its research findings, pilot a transition fund, increase the visibility of key bioregions, and forge alliances with media to elevate public awareness of regenerative businesses as viable drivers of healthy, inclusive and climate-resilient food systems. The project will facilitate connections between investors, producers, entrepreneurs and social organizations to accelerate regenerative business impact. A strong element of the project is its approach to building gender-responsive investment cases. The geographic focus of the Amazon and the Central American Dry Corridor will be maintained, while also exploring opportunities to extend the projectβs reach to other regions across Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).
