π Tender Overview
Project is implemented to facilitate loading of military material and vehicles in Kaunas Palemonas railway station, and also to create loading and unloading point for general cargo for 1435 mm. railway lines. Infrastructure, built during implementation of project will create connection between 1435 mm. rail line and 1520 mm. rail line on North Sea-Baltic Corridor, facilitating cargo traffic across territory of Lithuania, connection with western Europe and unhindered railway traffic across Baltic states, especially after completion of Rail Baltica high speed railway line. Priority of Lithuania in implementing this project is to support military mobility and contribute to joint security operations in Lithuania and Baltic states by having unloading point for military equipment arriving from western Europe in strategic point in the centre of Lithuania. Such point will ensure increased mobility of military and also decrease heavy transport use in roads and contribute to increased safety and decrease in emissions. Also, infrastructure planed will be of dual civilian and military use β railway track, unloading ramps, storage area and unloading equipment will be used for loading and unloading of general and bulk cargo, ensuring access point to 1435 mm. line for civilian customers. By ensuring the possibility to unload military material and vehicles and general and bulk cargo, arriving on 1435 mm. railway network in Kaunas, Lithuania will gain increased access to this network, decrease time for transporting military and general cargo to final destinations in Lithuania, thus decreasing emissions and road use. It is expected that after the completion of project, the facility will allow for an loading/unloading capacity of at least 30 trains (20 000 tons of cargo). The trains will also be loaded with cargo for transportation to Poland and other destinations on 1435 mm. network and also will make cargo connections to road and 1520 mm. rail lines across Lithuania.
