π Tender Overview
Scope :
first phase of the project to expand Melchior Ndadaye International airport in the western city of Bujumbura. The scheme aims to extend, rehabilitate and modernise the airport, which was built in the 1950s, with the first phase to be undertaken by Chinaβs Shanghai Boaye Group and funded by the Chinese government. Work on this phase involves the rehabilitation of the runway, taxiways and aircraft parking areas as well as the construction of a new control tower.
The second phase will include the construction and equipment of a new modern passenger terminal and a rapid runway exit route as well as a taxiway parallel to the runway and the extension of parking areas for aircraft and vehicles. The government is currently sourcing funding for this project. This project constitutes a major step in the development of multimodal transport infrastructure for the opening up of the country. This is in line with Burundi's Vision 2040 [to become an emerging country] and 2060 [to become a developed country], in its objective to improve logistics infrastructure and accessibility in all areas in order to engage the country towards structural transformation for a sustainable economy.
