Summary
Emerging technologies hold great transformative potential for sustainable development. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), however, often face barriers in harnessing emerging technologies for their own development, with technological breakthroughs overwhelmingly happening in national labs, universities or the private sector in high-income countries. The investment, infrastructure, intellectual property and other resources necessary to adapt and deploy such technologies in LMICs is often lacking.
This project will identify some of the key emerging technologies β beyond artificial intelligence β that hold the most promise for unlocking inclusive sustainable development. It will also identify where researchers in LMICs are engaged in such research already. In addition, applying a gender equality and inclusion lens will deepen understanding of how these technologies can have gender-differentiated impacts and can be implemented in ways to reduce gender inequalities. The project will take a regional approach to ensure relevant findings and recommendations for local actors. Research institutions in three different regions in the Global South will conduct mappings of the current state of emerging technologies in their respective regions.
Expected outcomes include a deepened understanding of the potential for emerging technologies to advance sustainable development, and evidence to inform policy decision-making. Science granting councils, the private sector, governments and other actors will also have a deepened understanding of the requirements for investments, capacity building and supportive policy frameworks.
