π Tender Overview
Scope of Work:
Construction of industrial-scale complex for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia in Sines, Portugal.
Description:
The consortium behind the project named MadoquaPower2X includes Portuguese industrial transformation and development company Madoqua Renewables, Dutch energy transition project developer and consultancy Power2X and the Energy Transition Fund of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). Using electricity from local wind and solar parks that are being developed in parallel, MadoquaPower2X will run 500 MW of electrolysers to produce 50,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 500,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year.
The trio anticipates securing all permits for the scheme and reaching readiness to take a final investment decision by the end of next year. The project, which will be the first one realised at the future energy and technological hub of Sines, is expected to contribute almost 25% of Portugalβs envisaged 2 GW of electrolyser capacity by 2030 under the nationβs National Hydrogen Strategy (EN-H2).
The consortium members are looking into the possibility of further expanding the scheme to potentially produce 1 million tonnes of green ammonia per year. They will start developing subsequent phases in 2024, with plans for full commissioning before 2030. The hydrogen produced at the site will be available for use by the local industry or for processing to create green ammonia for export. Sines provides an excellent location for this project β proximity to local heavy industry, an existing export terminal and the political will demonstrated by Portugal to be a key green hydrogen leader in Europe.
