π Tender Overview
Scope :
The dam on the Lunyangwa River is the main source of fresh water for the piped water system in Mzuzu city, with more than 250,000 people dependent on its supplies. The population in the area is growing rapidly, with expectations it could reach 500,000 by 2030.
To meet rising water demand, NRWB intends to expand the water storage capacity of the dam by increasing the embankment and raising the spillway height by 1.5 metres.
This will boost the volume of the reservoir from 4.36 million cubic metres to 5.54 million cubic metres.
The proposed works for Lunyangwa dam raising involves the following:
Raising of the concrete spillway by 1.5 metres
Construction of a 2-metre parapet wall on the existing dam crest with fill behind it
Inlet modifications at the intake tower
Reinstatement of the dam monitoring equipment and instruments
To ensure the safe operations of the modified dam, SMEC will develop a comprehensive dam safety management plan including an instrumentation and monitoring plan, an operations and maintenance plan, a dam break study and an emergency preparedness plan. The safety management plans are due to be completed in the second quarter 2024.
project is being financed by the European Investment Bank and forms part of the β¬24.6 million NRWB Water Efficiency Project, which aims to improve water resources management in Mzuzu, Ekwendeni and surrounding areas.
