Scope : To Construct New Rail Line from Puri to Konark in Odisha
The Railway Board has sanctioned the final location survey for the new rail line from Puri to Konark in Odisha. Its detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared.
The proposed 32 km-long Puri-Konark new line will have three new railway stations- Poratara, Bhinguradhia and Konark, as revealed by the East Coast Railway (ECoR) and as per the highlights of the DPR.
This project will come up at an estimated cost of Rs 491 crore. The proposed railway line will cross three rivers, Nuanai, Dhanua and Kushabhadra, and touch 37 villages. It will serve as railway connectivity to Konark Sun Temple and its museum, ASI Museum, Astaranga beach, Kuruma Buddhist site, Puri Jagannath Temple, Chandrabhaga beach, Puri sea beach, Ramachandi mandir and sea beach.
The Puri greenfield airport is 10 km away from Puri station, and 45 km from proposed Konark station. Though the ECoR had conducted a preliminary engineering and traffic (PET) survey for the proposed Puri-Konark railway line via Ramachandi in 2017, the route alignment was objected to by the forest department. However, the survey conducted in 2021 bypassed the wildlife sanctuary.
On February 2024, Union Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on announced a 32-km-long railway line between Puri and Konark connecting the Jagannath temple and the Sun temple, along with a Vistadome coach, as part of the Centreβs focus on organising spiritual, heritage and coastal tourism.
The work will begin as soon as the required 215 hectares of land is acquired by the state government.
