SHORT DESCRIPTION:
project goal
The aim of the project is to increase the yield and income of 100 small farmers in Sri Lanka through the intercropping of pineapple and coconut. By harvesting the newly planted pineapples and setting up a pilot area and tree nursery, a total of 92 new jobs will be created, which will increase value creation in the country. Accompanying field research and a strong focus on CSR issues (combating malnutrition, monitoring and reviewing salary increases for workers and income increases for farmers, improving infrastructure, etc.) help to ensure that the project achieves sustainable effects that extend beyond the target group.
expected results
The following objectives were defined:
- Creation of 42 (23m, 19f) new jobs (full-time equivalents) at the local partner Narayan Ceylon;
- Creation of 50 (40m, 10f) new jobs (seasonal) for the harvest of the newly planted pineapples;
- Increase the income of 100 smallholders (80m, 20f) by 50% at the end of the project;
- Substitution of 50 tons of plastic through the development of coconut fiber based plant pots;
- Conversion of 37.5 hectares of agricultural land to organic farming in accordance with EU organic regulations;
- Reaching a total of 1,000 people (at least 500f) through complementary measures in the areas of health, education and infrastructure.
