The project in brief
Background Livestock and animal product markets constitute an important foundation for regional integration and economic development in West Africa, a vector of wealth but also potentially of conflict. They employ more than 50% of the active population and contribute nearly 40% of the agricultural GDP in the Sahel countries. Animal production improves the nutritional status of populations and accounts for at least 25% of the monetary income of rural populations, including women, through trade. The demand for animal products in the region will increase with strong demographic growth (500 million inhabitants in 2030) and rapid urbanization, particularly in the coastal zone (Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, etc.). For pastoralists in the region and other actors in the value chain to meet this growing demand and take advantage of this potential, various constraints must be addressed. This program aims to improve the operation and profitability of the livestock sector at the regional level, thus making livestock farming attractive and a source of employment and income, particularly for young people and women. The intervention aims on the one hand to strengthen the private sector by improving production in quantity and quality, processing and sale, for the benefit of breeders and consumers. On the other hand, it supports regional institutions in order to facilitate trade in animal products in the region by reducing obstacles to cross-border trade. This program will facilitate the integration and development of players in the sector, particularly in the different countries of concentration. The program will also adopt an inclusive approach and conflict-sensitive management.
