DURATION
46 months
This 46-month project represents a co-investment in agriculture and energy research and innovation in partnership with Mozambique’s Fundo Nacional de Investigação (FNI). These sectors are aligned with Mozambique’s Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy. The strategy aims to harness science, technology and innovation and use it to eradicate poverty, as part of Mozambique’s Poverty Reduction Strategy.
Building on achievements from previous Science Granting Councils Initiative phases, the project supports the next stage of FNI’s institutional development. Efforts will now shift from strengthening internal systems to demonstrating scale, leadership and impact. The overall goal is to ensure closer alignment of research investments with national development priorities. The project will further consolidate FNI’s role as a leading SGCI Council by supporting the management of a targeted, impact-oriented portfolio that strengthens strategic partnerships and fosters the commercialization of research results.
The project is part of the third phase of the Science Granting Councils Initiative in sub-Saharan Africa (SGCI-3), which is funded by IDRC, the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), and the Wellcome Trust. Since its launch in March 2015, SGCI has focused on strengthening the capabilities of Science Granting Councils across Africa, enabling them to better support high-quality research and evidence-based policymaking as a driver of economic growth and social development.
