Project Summary:
Develop 5 ha of plantain using agroecological technologies.
Project Justification:
With a production of approximately 1,700,000 t/year, plantain is, in volume, the third most widely produced and consumed starchy food by the Ivorian population after yam and cassava. However, poor production techniques marked by the excessive use of synthetic chemicals lead to the progressive lossbiodiversity, desertification and land degradation, posing the threat of insecurity on populations.
To resolve this problem, the NTY Foundation intends to introduce a new banana production technique in a farming environment, namely the Tithonia Diversifolia fallow and a watering system to ensure production in all seasons and thus fight against banana production. food insecurity.
Main Objective:
Contribute to food security by ensuring the sustainable production of plantains.
Main results:
Development of fallow land; at least 30 producers have acquired knowledge on the proposed technology; 5 ha of plantation are created.
Main activities:
Establishment of a Tithonia nursery; Preparing the land for fallowing; planting plantain shoots; creation of 5 ha of plantain trees; installation of the irrigation system.
Community participation plan:
The implementation of the Project will be carried out by the farmers of the said locality.
Inclusion-women, indigenous peoples, young people and people with disabilities:
The women's project and the project plot will serve as a training field for producers in the region.
Impact, sustainability, scaling and reproduction:
The technology guarantees the production of bananas over several years without the use of chemical fertilizers and nematicides; which allows the project to be replicated in other production areas.
Knowledge management:
Knowledge on this technical banana planting route will be transmitted to producers.
Risks and mitigation measures:
Lack of water which will be alleviated by manual watering.
