PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Context
In 2023, natural disasters resulted in economic losses of USD 380 billion worldwide, underscoring the growing threat of climate change. In India, the frequency and severity of heatwaves are increasing, testing public health systems, jeopardizing food security, and straining electricity grids.
Heatwaves are projected to affect 300 million people in India by 2050, reducing the country's gross domestic product (GDP) by 2.8 percent. The Indian government has already implemented mitigation measures and forecasting tools. However, gaps remain. To address these, heatwave management must be integrated into broader climate risk strategies. Innovative financial instruments are needed to protect vulnerable groups from their impacts.
Objective
Public and private initiatives have improved climate-smart natural resource management, mitigated heatwave-related risks, increased productivity in targeted areas, and improved local livelihoods.
Approach
The project supports the National Disaster Management Authority in integrating heatwave mitigation into broader risk management strategies by further developing relevant policies and developing practical measures.
The project:
β’ facilitates national and international exchange on innovative approaches to mitigating the impacts of heatwaves;
β’ supports authorities and institutions in applying technical solutions, including financial instruments, to address heatwave-related problems;
β’ promotes gender-sensitive and community-based approaches in collaboration with the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) to improve resilience to heatwave-related hazards.
