The project communities are located in the buffer zone of the Kaa Iya Integrated Management Natural Area, an area defined as a priority by the PPD/GEF – UNDP. The problem in general is given by: i) the high degree of water insecurity of families, reaching access to water three to four days a week and 4 hours a day, a situation that generates high rates of water diseases in the population. In addition to the above, the current pumping system is diesel, whose high cost and transportation make it economically impossible for families, who are in a situation of extreme poverty, to have water in sufficient quantity and continuity; ii) Weak capacities for agroecological food production (vegetables), precisely due to the lack of access to sufficient water that allows the cultivation of vegetables on a small scale, leading to the generation of nutritional food deficiencies in childhood; iii) Absence of community instances ofgovernance and efficient management of water resources; iv) There is evidence of the absence of explicit regulations mainly around water governance and forest conservation. The foregoing undoubtedly in the short and medium term puts at risk the multiple environmental, social, cultural and economic functions of forests in ecosystems of high importance for water recharge; v) A gradual and dangerous process of loss of environmental values ??of the Guaraní culture has been taking place, as well as a weakening of governance systems and collective management of the territory. vi) There is an erosion of the loss of knowledge and ancestral practices around the use of medicinal plants, due to the absence of spaces for intergenerational dialogue (grandparents/wise men with girls, boys and adolescents) and that children are in school.
The objective of the project is: Contribute to the improvement of the social, ecological and productive resilience of the life systems of two communities of the GAIOC Charagua Iyambae, improving their water security, medicinal food and governance capacity of their natural resources.
